AI Plays by No Rules — and It's Sparking a New Wave of Revolution
If you've been paying any attention, you'll have noticed that articles and content about ChatGPT have piled up faster than anyone can possibly read (and I wouldn't rule out that some of it was written by ChatGPT itself). There's simply too much ground to cover — it's hard to fit into a single article, and honestly, artificial intelligence alone could be the only topic worth covering all year. This is basically Steve Jobs reinventing the smartphone all over again, spawning an entire industry out of nothing. Can you imagine life without smartphones? Actually, you can — we all lived in that world before 2008. The level of convenience back then simply isn't comparable to today. Which is why, if there's only one thing you need to pay attention to this year, it's AI.
Fail to keep up with this AI revolution, and you'll get left behind at an exponential rate. ChatGPT is proof that quantity really can turn into quality. From Google's original Transformer paper up to today, plenty of researchers in this field assumed that finding smarter technical optimizations would be more effective than just brute-forcing scale with raw compute. But it turns out quantity really did become quality — OpenAI poured in a colossal amount of compute, bet everything on the giant-model approach, and it worked.
This technical path resembles building a fab: spend more, get more, attract more users, spend even more building the next generation. Whoever can't keep pace gets left flat on the ground, unable to move. Whoever's leading can keep terrifyingly extending that lead indefinitely. Without enough users, you can't justify spending that much money; and without buyers for anything less than the leading-edge process, you attract fewer users still, and fewer users means even less money to spend. It's very reminiscent of semiconductor capital investment — if you don't get in relatively early, you simply can't catch up, and latecomers end up having to spend an astronomical amount of money just to produce a tiny sliver of progress.
Microsoft Moves In — A 20-Year Sea Change for the Search Market
This year, jumping in is still not too late — the war isn't over yet — but with every year that passes, the compounding force of exponential growth will completely bury the latecomers. And every player getting into this game knows that, at least in the more general-purpose corners of the field, it's winner-take-all: everyone ranked second or lower is in for a rough, grinding existence.
What's already happening is a possible reshuffling of the tech-giant hierarchy: OpenAI sits in Microsoft's camp, and Microsoft is currently building GPT directly into its Bing search engine. That's going to have a huge impact on the future of the search industry. For a lot of people who'd rather not do the work themselves, all they really want is a single, explanatory answer to whatever question they can type in. Google today works by finding keyword matches across different websites; but according to Microsoft, Bing can use GPT to directly generate content summaries and answers, and even accept follow-up questions. In other words, Bing's approach is much closer to the logic of getting an answer from an actual human — and that's far more convenient for the average user.
The search engine market has barely changed in nearly 20 years. Ever since Google went public in 2004, it's basically had two straight decades of monopoly, leaving every competitor hopelessly far behind. Bing currently holds just 3% market share — and every single additional percentage point is worth roughly $2 billion. If Google doesn't respond well here, it's not impossible that the throne of the search industry actually changes hands.
After all, exactly this kind of thing already happened once before with browsers — only with Microsoft and Google swapping roles. Microsoft's browser went from near-total dominance to being displaced by Google's own browser in under 10 years. Google is now visibly struggling to respond, having rushed out its Bard AI in a hurry to counter the threat, though the general consensus still rates it as the weaker of the two.
Tech Giants Counter Move by Move — Everyday Life Gets Shaken Up
Since GPT's release, we've probably only tapped into less than 1% of what's actually possible — there's a huge amount of feasible work still waiting in the wings. And that mere 1% has already reshaped how a lot of people work and live. What comes after is honestly hard to even imagine.
I have a firsthand example: junior engineers at my own company are already using GPT to improve how they work. Programming has always been considered something of a holy grail — much like chess, where the skill gap between an elementary-school player and a grandmaster is enormous, but where getting anywhere at all requires some form of training and developed judgment. I've never trained at chess, so I lose to my own elementary-school nephew. But my nephew, paired with, say, an AlphaGo-level AI, could absolutely beat a grandmaster.
In the past, engineers who came up through coding bootcamps were often looked at skeptically by industry veterans, who wondered whether their "footwork" was solid enough — whether the fundamentals were really there. But if all an engineer needs is a basic level of trained judgment, paired with powerful AI assistance (which is already happening), that alone can meaningfully raise their overall output. Sure, this working methodology isn't going to produce grandmasters, but it's gradually becoming plausible that it can cover 90% of the work most people actually need done in real life. Based on my colleagues' own real-world experimentation, AI assistance seems to work out pretty well.
So AI genuinely plays by no rules at all — and that's exactly what makes it so intimidating. So, back to where we started: what happens to Google and the other tech giants that aren't in the Microsoft camp? First, I believe these giants — Facebook, Amazon, Google at the very least — still have plenty of tricks left up their sleeves; they all have deep technical reserves, the ability to form alliances, and staggering amounts of data. Second, I think worrying about Google is a bit like worrying about a cat with 5,000 lives — sure, it just lost one, but it's still got 4,999 left. Most of us, though — most working professionals — are just now sailing into rough waters, and we only get one life to spend. So this year, it's absolutely worth investing serious effort into understanding exactly how this AI revolution is unfolding.
